I've been looking at different artists who have put a twist on fairytales, mostly ones which are based in the woods (which is nearly all of them) when you think about it all the good ones are, "little red ridding hood" "Hansel and Gretel" "Snow White" "Alice in wonder land" and "Rapunzel" to say the least. Reasearching these Fairy Tales I have come across two Artists that caught my intrest.
The first, the brothers grimm, two German brothers from late 1700's early 1800's who are among the best-known story tellers of fairy tales. They listened to stories from other people and wrote down what they heard puttnig sinister twists to the tales, the Ypublished a number of children's books filled with German fairy tales like Snow White, Hansel and Gretel and Rapunzel, and this was before Walt Disney put his happy ending stamp on them. Example - in the brothers Grimm's snow white, the evil stepmother is forced to dance in red-hot iron shoes until she falls down dead, something Walt Disney kinda left out. The Grimm brothers were put down for the violent edge they had to their stories, but I'm liking this more creeper style of fairy tales, I have posted a link to an article of the brothers below.
The second artist I have been looking at is a modern artist called Lang Leav aka Akina. In the link I have given below you will see her work from the hand-crafted picture books called "Poems for Piotr" to "The Teddy Bear's Picnic", a collection of stories with a sinister twist to famous fairytale characters, artwork and stories by Lang Leav. This Woman is amazing! the pictures shown are her work, not only does she Illustrate and make hand-crafted books but she creates buttons, fashion pieces, postcards and sterling silver works of art, all with a beautiful quirky feel to them, they remind me of the books "A series of unfortunate events" by Lemony Snicket (awesome books by the way) (link below) back to Lang Leav, her work is REALLY inspiring to me, I think im going to do something based on her work........ideas?? please.
If you look at any links on this page please pick the one above, her work is fantastic. just keep scrolling down on the page and you'll find her work. theres also someone else on the page who has work based in a woody area too. Kareena Zerefos', but Leav's work stood out to me more.
