Young mother and child

A photograph depicting the initial moments of care between a young mother and her child. The midwife is giving the child it's first bath after their arrival into this world to show the mother how to effectively wash and handle her child. The mothers body language would indicate a certain level of hostility towards the idea of caring for her newborn baby. I not only find this photograph to represent a significant stereotype in regards to young mothers, but I am also interested in this topic due to my own personal experience throughout the during of Pregnancy.

It's not discrimination by artist Chris Nies

i found this so interesting. as described on the website i found it on- "Over time people of all races have been in chains/shackles. (some still are)."

i think this depicts the idea that discrimination can be against all races not necessarily just what we may deem the obvious.

Summer Project 2011

Students coming on to the 2011/ 12 course are asked to respond to the idea of 'DiscriminHate'. This is in order that each student can submit a photo-based work to the Worldskills 2011 Exhibition in London.

We are asking you to keep a sketchbook over the summer in which you will gather images and ideas that relate to the theme of ‘discrimination’- this may be age related, body related, gender related, race related- it is up to you how you respond to the theme.

The main aim obviously is to highlight a type of discrimination which you want to speak out against, and which you can imaginatively portray through your own photographic image.

Once you have been invited as an 'author' on the site, you can post images and ideas, and comment on each other's work, over the summer break. Click on Post Title at the top for an interesting link to the work of artist Marc Quinn- it's one artist's take on a form of discrimination he wanted to highlight. What issue will your photograph highlight?

Do Something....

As you start to piece your research together, just remember that starting simply to work with your materials will lead to something else. I'm reminded of this by watching an interview with Malcolm Morley (click on Post Title above picture), where he says something which I always find true when I'm working on a painting...do something, do something else. Jasper Johns (picture) said exactly the same thing, and it's so simple but truely effective: 'Do something, do something to that, and then do something to that,' to quote him directly. Always keep this in mind. Ideas, materials and the visual outcomes reveal things as you work with them, not by 'overthinking' things.

Why Didn't Dexter Win?

Click on title above for interview with painter Dexter Dalwood. The last painter to win the Turner Prize was Tomma Abts in 2006. Look at both of these painters in the context of the other artists who were shortlisted alongside them. Is there a reason that one should win one year, and the other not? Look for the other painters that have been shortlisted in previous years. Peter Doig is a big name just now in Painting- he was shortlisted in 1994 and didn't win, but it didn't do him any harm in the long run. How effective does each painters' work look in the context of the other artists shortlisted each year? Try working it out.....

PATHWAY STAGE

There will be some changes to the blog now that you are moving on to your Pathway subjects. It will now become more directed towards the different subject areas, so look out for posts that relate to your subject choices. In time the Top Ten Forest Artists will be changed, and replaced by contemporary artists and designers who staff feel are important for you to look at.
We are keeping the blog open to all Foundation students; although you are now moving in to specialisms, it will be a valuable for you to see what other students are looking at across the different subject areas. So keep checking-in regularly!
